Folkestone harbour: is this the way ahead?

May 4, 2010

Long-awaited plans over the future redevelopment of Folkestone harbour are to be revealed, with the public invited to give their own feedback.

Architect Sir Terry Farrell has been appointed by site-owner The Folkestone Harbour Company to come up with his own proposals, which will be on display for everyone to see.

The FHC had originally hired Lord Foster to draw up a masterplan for the area, which was then put on hold due to the economic downturn.

It is thought some of his ideas will be incorporated into Sir Terry's new designs.

Harbour company spokesman Trevor Minter said: "This process will offer local people opportunities to hear about the new approach that Sir Terry Farrell is advocating.

"We are keen to receive feedback, and people will have a chance to put forward their ideas for development of the public areas."

Public meetings on the proposals will be held at Quarterhouse in Folkestone's Tontine Street on Tuesday, May 18, Tuesday, May 25, at 7pm, Thursday, June 3, at 2pm, Monday, June 14, at 7pm and Saturday, June 26, at 11am.

Places at each presentation are free but must be reserved by calling the Quarterhouse box office on 01303 858500, with an out-of-hours answer phone, or by emailing info@quarterhouse.co.uk.

A public exhibition will be held at 3-7 Tontine Street, which is within view of part of the proposed site, beginning on Wednesday, May 26, until Wednesday, June 9, open from 10am-4pm each day.

Schools in the area will be invited to take part in the consultation through organised events, and an online summary will also be available from mid-May at http://www.folkestoneharbour.com/.

There will be opportunities to offer feedback at all stages of the consultation.

Sir Terry's work in Folkestone has been commissioned directly by The Folkestone Harbour Company.
