McAslan launches Canterbury regeneration scheme

John McAslan and Partners has unveiled its proposals to redevelop the rundown 10ha Wincheap estate on the edge of Canterbury, Kent.

The massive scheme for developer Capital & Counties has been submitted to Canterbury City Council for inclusion in its local plan.

Sitting on the south-western gateway to the historic cathedral city, the development would replace a number of shops and ageing business premises with a new mixed-use, mixed-density housing, retail and commercial quarter.

Aidan Potter, the practice's urban planning and infrastructure director, said: ‘This new mixed-use quarter will be delivered through a mixture of new build, regeneration and landscaping.

‘It's an important urban initiative in the continuing growth of Canterbury, and the creation of a neighbourhood of mixed urban scales on this large site, within walking distance of the historic centre, can be a springboard for further change to the urban, economic and transport structure.'

He added: ‘We've delivered an urban scheme with a pattern of clear public, private and semi-private urban spaces, within which development can be phased to suit demand, and ensure a deliverable response to Canterbury's needs.'

Work is expected to start on site in 2008.
