Developers shortlisted for Margate seaside development

Aug 13, 2007

Kent County Council and Thanet District Council have shortlisted four developers for the mixed-use development on Margate seafront, which is expected to help secure the famous resort's comeback as the first choice seaside destination in the south east.

The shortlisted developers are Crest Nicholson with Land Regeneration UK; Ellandi Property with Helical Bar; Gleeson Homes and Urban Splash.

The development, which will be situated adjacent to the proposed location for the Turner Contemporary visual arts scheme, is due to open in October 2010.

Kent County Council, cabinet member for regeneration Roger Gough said: "This is great news for the people of Margate. It will lead to more jobs for local people, stimulate business and improve the town's appearance. These companies are ideally placed to deliver a high quality development that will complement the gallery and become a key element in the comprehensive development of Margate's eastern seafront."

Duncan Thomas, of property consultants Donaldsons, who are leading the marketing of the site, said: "We are extremely pleased to have been able to select a shortlist of developers of this calibre for this key mixed-use regeneration opportunity. This sends out a clear message regarding the market's growing confidence in Margate as a location for new investment."
