Rescue plans for area go on show

Mar 28, 2008

A Master plan for the future of the Dover district in the next 20 years is being revealed to the publicĀ on Thursday 27 March.

The Local Development Framework has been produced by Dover District Council to set out its plans for improving life across the district by building new houses and transforming the area's economy.

Now it wants people to look through the proposals and have their say on the direction their towns are taking.

Exhibitions are being held at Dover Discovery Centre from today until Saturday, at Deal Library on April 4 and 5 and at Sandwich Guildhall on April 11 and 12. The plans admit there is catching up to be done if Dover, and the district as a whole, is going to prosper in the future.

They contain a frank admission from DDC that Dover is not making progress at the same pace as neighbouring towns.

The LDF document says: "The town currently has a poor image. It is under-performing and losing ground as competing town centres offer a better range of shopping, services and local facilities.

"After an unhappy period during the 1980s and early 1990s when the local economy suffered a series of major setbacks the district has recovered and seen steady growth."

Now the council hopes to create at least 10,000 new homes across the district, bring new jobs to the area and transform Dover into one of the leading towns in Kent.

Leaflets explaining the plans are being sent out to residents and DDC insist everyone's opinions will be taken into account as the proposals are developed.

For more information on the LDF you can come along to the exhibitions or log on to http://www.dover.gov.uk/.
