Dover torch campaign blasts off with more fireworks
A dramatic display of fire and light will illuminate Dover harbour as the town continues its campaign to welcome the Olympic flame to Britain.
The spectacular event, described as a dramatic and ground-breaking fire show celebrating Dover's history, is being staged to mark the start of the Cultural Olympiad ahead of the London 2012 Games.
It all happens at 8pm on September 26 and the pyrotechnic display will link the sea, the harbour and the White Cliffs. Nostalgic songs will also accompany the visual elements of the show.
The display is being produced by Kent County Council's arts development unit, Dover District Council and Dover Pride with support from the Arts Council and Dover Harbour Board.
DDC cabinet member for community, citizenship and sport Cllr Julie Rook said: "This is fantastic news for the area and is an incredible opportunity to celebrate Dover's world-class heritage and iconic coastline, and to highlight the major role the town can play in supporting London 2012.
"We are delighted to be working closely with KCC and partners to celebrate the Cultural Olympiad and to campaign to bring the Olympic torch through Dover."
This event also highlights the Kent campaign to welcome the Olympic torch relay into the UK at Dover, just as it did when the Games was last held in Britain in 1948.
The spectacular display is being produced by pyrotechnics firm The World Famous, who have combined fireworks, flames, special effects and theatre at events across the globe.
