Kent awarded Gold

Apr 24, 2009

Kent County Council has been awarded Beacon Status for its work on securing Legacy from the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Tessa Jowell, Olympics Minister, presented the award to Kent, which secured the top grade of ‘Outstanding'.

The Beacon Scheme is organised by the IDeA to recognise excellence in public sector services.

The multi-agency work on the 2012 Games led by Kent County Council has resulted in numerous new projects and programmes, including the Kent School Games involving 30,000 competitors; the establishment of the Kent eVent Team to secure volunteers for sport, leisure and cultural events; and a new structure for the development and support of talented potential Olympians and Paralympians. Through its 2012 work, Kent has secured more potential pre-Games Training Camps, more schools signed up to the London 2012 ‘Get Set' education programme and more companies registered with the London 2012 electronic brokerage system, CompeteFor, than any other county or area in the UK.

Chris Hespe, Head of Sport, Leisure and Olympics at Kent County Council, said, "It is great that our hard work has been recognised, but there is still a great deal more to do to ensure that Kent gains maximum benefit and long-term legacy from the 2012 Games. Like the majority of areas in the UK, we don't have any venues for the 2012 Games, yet we are committed to gain every possible benefit and ensure that the Games are used to help us achieve our existing ambitions sooner and better."
