The Port of Dover
The Port of Dover in East Kent is one of the world's busiest ferry terminals and as the nearest UK landing point to continental Europe, Dover is the top road haulage freight portal in the country with the capacity to handle 2.3 million road freight vehicles a year. Freight traffic has doubled in the last ten years and set to double again in the next thirty years.
Occupying 330 hectares of land and water, facilities include nine ferry berths and two cruise terminals. Dover also operates one of the top deep sea cargo terminals in the UK operating a 24 hour facility with freight handling and storage facilities including 13,000m² ambient and temperature controlled storage capacity.
Dover is one of the largest passenger ferry ports in Northern Europe and has a thriving cruise business. In 2006 alone, the Port of Dover handled 2.7million passenger vehicles and 13.7 million passengers.
Dover Marina provides accommodation for visitors in over 400 berths located in quality, scenic berthing areas. 200,000 cruise passengers passed through Dover in 2006 for the first time (136 ship visits).
East Kent is set to benefit from a £420 million redevelopment of the Port of Dover's Western Docks with four cross-Channel ferry berths, a new marina and a property development.
"The opportunities for investors are considerable in East Kent. With a substantial financial commitment to the development of the area over the next few years, the regeneration of East Kent is creating a place where business can benefit now and in the future."
Bob Goldfield, Chief Executive, Dover Harbour Board.
