London Ashford Airport
Lydd Airport is operated by London Ashford Airport Ltd. LAA offers access to a market of 1.1 million people within a one hour drive time and over 13.5 million within two hours. The airport benefits from a readily available runway with reduced delays and fast check in times compared to larger regional airports.
London Ashford Airport (LAA) has plans to regenerate the local economy to create hundreds of jobs and provide long-term training opportunities for young people. Their plans include a new terminal building capable of handling up to 500,000 passengers a year and a 444 metre extension to the existing 1,505 metre runway.
Planning applications for the terminal building and the runway extension are to be considered by Shepway District Council on 30 January 2008. The expansion has the potential to make a significant contribution to the achievement of key regeneration and economic development priorities relating to skills development and training.
More than £20m has been invested in upgrading facilities at Lydd over the past few years, including a resurfaced runway, improved instrument landing system, the creation on an aircraft parking apron covering a 13 acre site, a new air traffic control system and new VIP terminal, improved car parking and new departure and arrival facilities for commercial traffic.

"Our proposals for the airport will be good for people looking for worthwhile careers in aviation, good for local communities, good for local businesses and good for the East Kent region as a whole. I'm confident that our development plans are the best way forward to securing sustainable prosperity for the area."
Zaher Deir, LAA managing director.
